Shop, Compare, Buy

Health insurance exchanges are online marketplaces that make buying health insurance simple. At least, that’s the idea. You can view and compare certified health plans, and access tools to help you make smart decisions about your health care. Education is a big part of these exchanges.

States are required to either set up one or more state or regional exchange, merge with other state exchanges, partner with he federal government, or opt out completely and let the federal government control the state exchange.

Limited Age Rating

Your age matters when health insurance costs are concerned. It’s how insurance carriers have typically based premiums. The unfortunate part about this is how an older age can result in exponentially higher premiums. An elderly person with the same coverage as a younger individual could have paid five times more for insurance. Not anymore. The Affordable Care Act (ACA), set limits on age rating.

  • 3:1 ratio. An older person can pay no more than three times that of a younger person with the same type of coverage.
  • Across-the-board affordability. That’s the goal of limiting age rating and spreading premium costs over a larger range of age groups. Younger Americans could pay higher monthly premium payments as they become part of a wider, higher risk pool.

Including the Essentials

Some health care services are an absolute must. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) calls them “essential benefits,” and they range from emergency services to prescription drugs. By 2014, certain health plans must offer essential health benefits in order to be included on the new health insurance exchanges.

10 categories of care. These essential benefits must include the 10 following categories of service, and items within each category:

  • Ambulatory patient services
  • Emergency services
  • Hospitalization
  • Maternity and newborn care
  • Mental health and substance use disorder services
  • Behavioral health treatment
  • Prescription drugs
  • Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices
  • Laboratory services, preventive and wellness services, and chronic disease management
  • Pediatric services, including oral and vision care
